"Our candidate at next Presidential election may be Maithripala" -- Namal
It is the view of political critics that no political party is able to proceed with a stabilised government power according to political unrest prevailing at present these days. Therefore, there is a possibility that matters are hastened to go in for elections while on the legal perspective it is the Presidential election that can be held soon. It can be held on a constitutional basis after 9th January 2019. On the other hand, if General Elections are to be held, in that case according to the judgement of Supreme Court of the 7th, the parliament should be dissolved with a 2/3rd majority being passed with parliament being dissolved on the decision of the President to
dissolve parliament being approved or the parliament budget Act not being approved.

Whatever it is, it is doubtful as to whether President Maithri or Prime Minister Mahinda are interested in going for a quick Presidential election. What was reported earlier was that Maithri - Mahinda got together so soon without being patient for another year because of the intention of protecting Mahinda's court cases which would otherwise have brought catastrophic results under a special court and to compensate for such an outcome Mahinda was to hand over the forthcoming Alliance Presidential candidacy to Maithri. On the basis that Mahinda will not be able to vie for Presidentship according to the 19th amendment he would have to console himself with the position of Prime Minister. Accordingly, the programme to make Gotabhaya the President has become only a matter of publicity.
Political parties are currently talking about a Presidential candidate with interest and the UNP is getting ready to nominate a common candidate. In the meantime, Namal Rajapaksa was asked during a discussion whether Maithripala Sirisena will be given the opportunity as Presidential candidate of the Alliance and he had responded saying, " there is of course time for that no ... we are discussing with him. By now there is a good affinity between President Maithripala Sirisena and us. Let's talk about it when elections are drawing nigh".
