Disguised group comes to Welikada Prison and whisks away prisoner!

An incident is reported where some people have arrived at Welikada remand prison in a prison bus deceptively prepared and had fled after taking away with them a suspect who was imprisoned in connection with dealing in narcotics.

They had deceived security officers and had thereby secured their permission to enter and had managed to whisk away a suspect by the name of Sunil Shantha who had been taken into custody about 6 months before this, it is understood. The person concerned was arrested with 2 kilos of heroin
worth over Rs. two crores in Horana area. He is supposed to be a resident in Galle and has been identified as a leading narcotics dealer and a main accomplice of Susev and Siddick.

The said suspect has made an attempt several times to escape from Kalutara Prison and an incident is reported of making his escape by giving a bribe of 5 crores. Later he has been transferred to Colombo remand prison. The suspect incidentally was confined to a special type of detention chamber. However, he has been successful enough to make good his escape by entering a false prison bus near the hospital at the premises according to a cleverly devised plan.

The suspect who was brought from Kegalle Prison last 7th to remand prison in Colombo was supposed to be sent to Kalutara Prison once again. The reason for it is that he was to appear for another court case being heard in Matugama Court. Therefore, the missing suspect has been transferred to Kalutara that day as recorded in Welikada record books and has left Welikada with a disguised group of persons and not in a bus supposed to take him to Kalutara as such but in a bus belonging to them. However, when this came to light, he had already made his escape. Though this clandestine escape had taken place in that manner, the prison guards had not been promptly alerted in that connection. This situation was initially been revealed when the suspect concerned had not appeared for the court case when the Kalutara case was to be heard day before yesterday (20) and subsequently inquiries were launched across Kalutara Prison. CCTV investigations later revealed as to from which spot the suspect had disappeared.
