No GSP if death penalty is imposed

The French News Service has reported that quoted an extract from European Union diplomatic news sources that the European Union has sounded an alarm that the GSP Plus afforded to Sri Lanka if the death penalty would be reintroduced.

The European Union and countries such as Britain, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Rumania, Canada have sent a letter to
President Maithripala Sirisena to withhold imposing the death penalty. The GSP Plus is a tax concession afforded to developing countries acting in accordance with Rights and international standards. Sri Lanka happened to forego the GSP Plus concession in 2010 because of human rights violations some other allegations. However, after the new regime came into power it was once again provided in the month of May last year.

The European Union state machinery says that because of the GSP Plus Trade Concession Sri Lanka reaps a profit of close upon Euro million 300 (equivalent to 350 million dollars) annually and that if the death penalty is imposed, there is a possibility that the GSP Plus concession would be withheld. Whatever it is, the decision taken by the President to impose the death penalty as a justified step to control aggression which keeps on emerging in the country was subjected to appreciation from various quarters recently and the European Union arriving into judgements such as this without properly understanding the matter concerned is a question.
