The topic of the death penalty being brought into force once again which has been subjected to discussion these days has taken a different turn because of the news that the European Union and certain other religious organisations expressing their opposition to this move, bringing forward GST suspension. 

What has been published in the Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper which is to come to the newsstands tomorrow (22) as their leading news item is as follows: "Proposal to enforce death penalty is to be
removed". Having read this article in the newspaper, President Maithripala Sirisena has stated at a rally in Polonnaruwa today that this piece of news in not true. What he mentioned on that occasion was: "It is mentioned on the first page of a national newspaper to be released tomorrow Sunday that the decision arrived by the government to enforce the death penalty is to be stopped. Whatever obstacles come on the way, that action of enforcing the death penalty will go into action, against those involved in narcotics".
