Maskeliya police station stoned -- riot squad summoned!
Establishing new institutions at the local government elections appears to be creating humorous incidents in the process these days. those who were shouting out as to why this election is not being held have now not turned up in the House and as there had been no majority, some proceedings have been postponed. In some other instances, have resorted to dismissing candidates who were selected
at the highest level by the voters and instead have elected chairmen and mayors. It is under these circumstances that electing chairmen and vice chairmen activities took place amidst much commotion.
On the occasion when the Maskeliya provincial council committee meeting commenced at Maskeliya Ambal Hall, Mr. S.A. Dissanayaka of United Peoples' Liberation Front has proposed Mrs. Sembagawalli of the Sri Lanka Labour Congress as chairman of Maskeliya provincial council with a majority of 8 members with the support of the Sri Lanka Labour Congress and an independent group.
Though there were 7 members from the United National Party and 7 from the Sri Lanka Labour Congress, as all members were not present today, no names were nominated for the position of chairman, Mrs. Sembagawalli was selected as the chairman. At this point 6 members of the United National Party voiced their opinion saying that injustice was done to them and as a result an unpleasant atmosphere prevailed. Under this situation the police had even to summon the riot squad. By that time the police had to face stones being hailed at them.
