Security strengthened because Facebook was blocked -- IGP
No convincing results -- Namal
Rumours were rampant -- Mahinda
Parallel to the crisis that occured in Kandy, on requirements of implementing controlling methods, the government has taken measures to block some networks such as Facebook, Viber, Watsup and it has turned out to be a great asset to administer control on racial conflicts that took place in Kandy and other places, Inspector General of police, Pujith Jayasundera states. IGP Mr.
Pujith Jayasundera expressed this last morning at the meeting of security chiefs held at Temple Trees with prime minister Mr, Ranil Wickremasingha presiding. It was reported by him explaining the progress observed within 24 hours or so after such a taboo was enforced. In the instance of crises such as in Kandy, just as much as controlling networks like Facebook; in future, alert should be exercised over carriers of false news in the form of e-mail messages, Facebook pages and certain websites and in that respect the technological know-how of Germany and Phillipines should be made use of, security chiefs have told prime minister.
Amith and Sureda have been instrumental in bringing about the Kandy crisis ad they have played a huge role within the social media regarding the controversy in connection with the crisis concerned and the Facebook pages they maintained under titles of 'Mahason balakaaya' and 'Sinhale' for quite sometime had made an influence on society, thus creating a cult. Taking all this into consideration, social media need be surveyed in future and action should be immediately taken in each such instance on acts of spreading messages of discord. In this connection intelligence services have been notified, it is reported.
Whatever it is, what member of parliament Namal Rajapaksa has said about he interference created on social media is that it is futile and that there are options in the internet available to avoid this taboo and gain access to the relevant websites. He added that in the year 2015 India too exercised such a step, but no advantage was forthcoming. In the meantime, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed his ideas saying that "What happened by this was that there were more rumours floating around. When those are there, outcome of the news though correct ... they are circulated sevenfold". While control on social media would be a temporary matter and in the face of a peaceful atmosphere in Kandy dawning this far, it would be brought to its former state soon, it is reported.
