Pistol and complaint vanishes and Ramith Rambukwella is bailed out in just 1 day after attacking Open University Engineer students!
As a result of an argument going beyond limits in connection with a motor accident which took place close to Nawala Open University, son of MP, Mr. Keheliya Rambukwella, cricketer Ramith Rambukwella was taken into custody by Narahenpita Police on the 9th night for having committed the offence of assaulting a student in the third year in the Engineering Faculty on the head with a pistol and causing injury. However, on what
transpired after that the suspect had got the opportunity of ging back home instantly.
The said incident has occured around 8 in the night when on the day Ramith, an Old Boy of Royal College had gone to watch the Royal - Thomian cricket match and while traveling to the flat in the housing complex down Lake View in Narahenpita. A motor bicycle approaching in the opposite direction towards Nawala from Narahenpita had struck Ramith's motor vehicle. 2 youth had been travelling on the motor bike concerned and the two of them had fallen down with the bike on that occasion. A heated exchange of words has taken place at that moment between the 2 students understood to be studying in the third year Engineering Faculty of the said university. In that instance the 2 students had contacted another student of the same Engineering Faculty over the phone who then arrived at the scene with another student on a motor bike. On that occasion Ramith had shown a firearm and threatened them. The students had then forwarded a complaint about it to the police.
During the argument Ramith Rambukwella has got inside the motor vehicle and had fetched a pistol and with it had hit the head of one student, a higher police officer said as was mentioned in the complaint. Police officers who commenced inquiries around 11 in the night had taken Ramith Rambukwlla into custody at the flat in the housing complex concerned. The student who is supposed to have been assaulted had received treatment at Kalubowila Hospital and later left the hospital. A higher police officer remarked that suspect Ramith Rambukwella after having brought by Narahenpita Police was checked to ascertain whether he had been under liquor that night itself and it was confirmed so. However he said that the pistol which was supposed to have been in his possession could not be located. The student who was subjected to the assault day-before-yesterday (10) afternoon had withdrawn his complaint at once. As such, Ramith Rambukwella was released day-before-yesterday evening on bail.
Ramith Rambukwella who was arrested for having assaulted using a pistol thus had managed to go home without any problem at all without being produced before courts, as the complaint had been withdrawn. President's Counsel Kalinga Indratissa who appeared at the police on behalf of Ramith Rambukwella had consented to pay a compensation to the complainant party on behalf of his client and therefore the student's parents had withdrawn the complaint made. It was explained that if this was to be taken up in courts this most clearly was not an instance for which bail could be granted and that already a similar incident has taken place where a provincial council member in the South and his wife are spending their time in jail. Whatever it is, police say that steps are being taken to file action in Aluthkade Traffic Courts tomorrow (13) against Ramith Rambukwella for the offence of driving under the influence of liquor and for not preventing an accident.
