"The Indian government introduced the emergency ambulance service to Sri Lanka in 1990. This ambulance service is in operation in Western and Southern areas. In the case of accidents happening in villages, patients are taken to the hospital by three-wheeler. Protests were launched against this
ambulance service too. Leaders of Health Associations wanted stones thrown at, in these instances. But the public are making use of this ambulance service. From next year this ambulance service would be in operation throughout the country. The Indian Prime Minister said that he would extend his support for this. Only 88 ambulance vehicles are available at present. A further 250 ambulances would be given. Further, I surveyed the Germany Steiger Foundation Emergency Service. The Emergency Service is in operation both by land and by air.

24 helicopters, 1025 ambulances and 24 disaster vehicles have been promised. But it was disaster vehicles and helicopters that we obtained initially. Because of the present traffic congestion in Sri Lanka, on certain occasions ambulances cannot go on the roads. Therefore it is very important that the emergency service operates from air and land. Further, general hospitals, 24 teaching hospitals and emergency units would be established. In the same way, 48 centres for blood transfusion services are being established and expanded ...".
