Officer dedicated to 'Safety from road accidents' knocks 2 cars with his jeep and evades compensation!

A curious piece of news was reported recently of a head who functions in his professional life by appearing on behalf of road safety and in connection with those who scamper away after committing road accidents, had knocked 2 vehicles and subsequently had evaded the situation.

A leading officer of 'National Council for Road Safety' which comes under the Ministry of Transport
had knocked 2 cars travelling along the road and had caused damages by driving his Mitsubishi jeep negligently in Narahenpita area, Colombo some days ago. As a result both cars have sustained dents from the rear-side while the damages have been estimated at over 6 lakhs.

Though that officer had proceeded to settle the matter at that moment after a dialogue with owners of the cars and when the two persons concerned, supposedly government servants, had demanded payment of that loss, he had later tried to stick to a principle of avoiding the issue, it was reported. Because of this situation the two of them had lodged a complaint with the police and Narahenpita Police are engaged in carrying out an inquiry on the incident.

It is queer to note that this accident had occured during the very 'Road Safety Week' launched by the National Council itself where this officer is in service. It has been mentioned in that website that it is the only State institution which functions under the theme 'A Road Safety System for All'. In addition, the following activities too are being activated under that same institution:
Paying compensation to accidents caused by unidentified vehicles
Providing advice to the government on policies and projects allied to road safety
Gathering information on affiliated topics, conducting research and field research. Two photographs of the moment the accident took place, from below
