Murali’s absence from the presentation podium at the conclusion of the  Test series was that he had left to India

The three Test series between the visiting Australian team and Sri Lanka was fought for the Warne-Murali trophy. At the end of the series Muttiah Muralidharan had accepted the invitation to be a part of the presentation team as a special guest.. But at the end of the match he
had not been present.

The reason for his absence had been attributed to the fact before the commencement of the Test series Muttiah Muralidharan had agreed to coach the Australian spinners for a a period of ten days. This had caused a wrong impression on the minds of the authorities of our cricket.

During this period Murali’s father had added to the media that he was waiting for the Aussies to triumph.In the meanwhile after Murali had explained his stand to the public when he was called a traitor by the officials of the SLC, the matter was resolved between the two factions.

However in complete contrast to Murali’s father’s prediction Sri Lanka became triumphant whitewashing the mighty Aussies. Murali had requested the role entrusted to him to be palmed over to someone else and left to India.
