This morning the 30th instant Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has received the membership of the United National Party from the Prime Minister .He had received a letter to serve as the new Organizer of the UNP’s Kelaniya seat.
With his membership of the UNP , his party the Democratic Party has been dissolved and those members who wish to contest in the Provincial Council elections could contest under the UNP ticket.
It is relevant to mention that Sarath Fonseka in the presidential election in the year 2010 had been a stiff opposition to Mahinda Rajapaksa. After his defeat he formed the new Democratic Party. He won a seat in the parliament having contested for the Colombo district .But he lost his parliamentary seat as he was imprisoned. The seat that was vacant was given to the deputy leader of the Democratic party Jayantha Ketagoda.
After he was released from prison Jayantha Ketagoda held on to the seat having supported Mahinda Rajapaksa. During the last general election the Democratic Party could not secure a single seat. However he was offered a seat from the national list for his close relationship and having signed an agreement with the Maithripala Sirisena and the United National Party.
