The media in England are talking about a Sri Lankan student who heroic enough to prevent a robbery that was to take place in a shop there by hammering the culprits with a baseball bat and chasing them away when they were armed with knives in their hands.
28 year old Lushan Weerasooriya this student who is following his Bachelor Degree at Salford University in Britain had been on duty at a wine and customer goods shop in the capacity of a cashier on a part-time job. When he had commenced his shift around
7 in the evening 2 persons who had come there had threatened him demanding cash in the drawer. At that moment what they had said was that the condition of their mother who was suffering from cancer had aggravated and that they needed money to attend to those expenses. When Lushan told these two individuals who had been highly intoxicated with liquor and had possessed an unnatural look on them that he is not in a position to accede to their request, they had then taken knives into their hands and tried to attack him. At that moment he had got hold of a baseball bat which he had hidden for his safety close to his cashier seat and had begun dealing blows on the robbers continuously and brought them under control which finally resulted in the robbers fleeing from the spot.
Even before 48 hours elapsed, the British Police were able to get the two robbers who tried the robbery into their custody after carrying out a survey on the CCTV camera tapes. It was revealed that it was two brothers aged 37 and 32 who had come for this robbery and the police were able to find that they were addicted to cocaine in a serious manner and had been trying to find a way of buying the said drugs. Whatever it is, their mother has in fact been a cancer patient and it was revealed that at the time her two sons were nabbed by the police she had breathed her last. The suspects who were subsequently produced before courts were later sentenced to 4 years and 4 months imprisonment.
Lushan who stifled the robbery was a youth who had gone to England in the year 2014 to sit for his post-graduate Degree and was a resident of Panadura. He is a son of a police officer in this country, it is reported. Lushan has explained that he had assaulted the robbers without thinking twice and that he had not been confronted with an experience such as this before. Whatever it is his shop owner had been thankful to him for his heroic act and had remarked that self-defence was something of priority on that occasion and that if only he had palmed over the money asked for, Lushan would not have to worry about the situation.
