Child born in police car on Colombo-Katunayaka Expressway
An incident is reported of a child born inside a car belonging to the Expressway Police Division along the Katunayaka-Colombo Expressway.
The date scheduled for the birth of this child was forthcoming 23rd. The pregnant mother and her
husband living in Chilaw had last 07th made an appointment with a doctor of a channel service of a private hospital and had been travelling at a high speed with their driver along the Expressway and were closing in upon Peliyagoda Access when a tyre had burst and because it resulted in a severe jerk the mother had faced some difficulty physically. The doctors had later said that the 'water bag' which acted as the protective covering of the baby in the mother's womb had burst that moment.
Though the driver had got down from the vehicle and had shouted and solicited help from vehicles moving on the route, nobody had even cast a glance in that direction and had instead gone their way. Whatever it is, police officers attached to protection duties on the Expressway had promptly come to that spot and had made the pregnant lady and her husband into the police car. The child incidentally had been born just a few minutes later. It was a baby son who was born this way.
Subsequently, they were transported to the private hospital in Colombo by the police car for further attention for treatment. The baby's father commented that the baby is free from danger and is in good health. He added that the support given by the police is something that should be appreciated. Police constables S.D. Abeyratna (39457) and R.D.J.P.K. Ranasingha (88712) had been on duty on that occasion.
