A young man who was travelling on a motor cycle was knocked down by a black-coloured jeep belonging to Minister Patali Champika around 9.30 in the night in Welikada area in Rajagiriya last Sunday and he was admitted to

hospital after sustaining injuries. The driver of the vehicle was brought before law enforcement agencies.

The Minister says that his political opponents have woven up various distorted stories about this incident. One rumour is that the vehicle was driven by the Minister. Another story is, fleeing after the accident. The next story is that two youth had pursued the vehicle and stopped it and had found that it was Champika himself who is responsible for the accident. The Minister had given details accompanied with photographs in the Minister's Facebook Account explaining this incident in the following manner:

"There was a group of young children travelling in the direction of Borella towards Rajagiriya around 10.00 p.m. last Sunday on motor bikes. On that occasion one bike had knocked on the left-hand side of the Nissan Petrol Jeep which I use as an additional vehicle which belongs to the Ministry. The said bike was of a capacity of 1000 C.C. and it had been bought a few days before. It had been driven by a young man from Aluthgama area aged 24 years. After knocking the jeep he had become unconscious. An arm and one of his ribs had sustained a fracture. The youth who was seated on the pillion had however suffered no damage.

False rumours are being spread around that the driver who was driving the motor vehicle had fled after the accident. The Rajagiriya Police are conducting investigations in relation to the accident while my driver who was at the driving seat of the jeep has been taken into custody and legal action has been filed against him. Even his driving license has been suspended by courts. The police have noted down evidence from those in the vicinity when the accident happened and the police say that the driver was arrested based on that evidence and legal action has already been taken thereof. There is an opportunity now to conduct any inquiry subjected to the existing law in the country. When circumstances are such, I appeal not to get trapped by false propaganda carried out by taking decisions in one's own private capacity according to one's own knowledge. Let us wish a quick recovery for the young child who is under treatment in hospital".
