living alone in top-storeyed house near Galle Road, Panadura ....

and whose skeletons were found .... finally nabbed

It was reported that bodies of two aged younger and elder sisters, both spinsters, living in a top-storeyed house by the side of Galle Road,
Uyankelle area in Panadura whose dissolved skeletons were discovered last year in March after they had died seven or eight months before.

The police have now been able to uncover information which could be suspected as these deaths being a case of homicide. The person who had killed them and looted items in the house too has been cornered by the police. The said two spinster-sisters Padma Fernando (72) and Mallika Fernando (70) had been living alone in this house and since they were not on good terms with their relatives or friends and were detached from their association, news of their deaths in this manner was delayed of coming into the ears of everybody.

Dickman Fernando, a younger brother of theirs who visited the house after a long time and on inquiring about them found that the door was locked; hence he had entered the house by breaking open the back door in which instance he was able to find the skulls of the deceased sisters and parts of their bodies in a room in the house. After the police were notified about this he had made a further search and had observed that the clothes-almirahs had been tampered with and that several items of household goods had been looted, in which case the police pursued investigations on the clues they had come across. As such they were successful in taking a father of two children into custody 9 months after they commenced investigations and he was a resident living down Sagara Mawatha, Panadura. After interrogation, it was confirmed that he had sold items of the robbed household items to the neighbourhood in the area. Among the recovered items of goods, there had been a very expensive almirah about 100 years old and two other almirahs, a gold necklace, a pair of ear-rings, a teapoy set, a cassette recorder and glassware, it was revealed.

The arrested person was someone who was in jail regarding drug offences and robbery and he had even been strongly addicted to drugs, police say. The police suspect that he had murdered both these two sisters simultaneously and then engaged in this looting activity. Whatever it is, the suspect has still not admitted murder. The suspect has been remanded till 13th of this month after having been produced before Panadura Courts.
