Big commotion in Kahawatta .... for having acquitted murderers!
Water cannons by police; stones from villagers
According to a judgement given this afternoon at high courts, Colombo the 3 main suspects who
had raped and killed and set fire to a mother and daughter at Kotakethana, Kahawatta were acquitted and set free and villagers of Kahawatta who faced that incident had got on to the roads protesting against the court decision.
The protestors who argued with the police and got into conflict with the police had mentioned that they are on an unsafe footing and that the killers are on the loose. They even protested against the media and had prevented them coming there. Later, these protestors who said that they would not leave the road until a solution is given to them approached the middle of Embilipitiya - Ratnapura Road and then lied down on the road blocking movement of traffic thereby. The police then had to disperse those who engaged in this protest and an attempt was taken to prevent obstruction of the road but they had turned a deaf ear to the police.
The crowd kept on protesting in this very same manner for almost 2 hours and the police had to use low pressure water cannons on them. As a counter attack for this the protestors are said to be aiming stones towards the police.
