Pasyala youth who climbed balcony of three-storeyed house ...
to escape police ... meets with death (CCTV)
A person who had climbed a building in Pasyala
area had fallen from its third floor and died last night.
Though the police say that the reason for this was his drunkenness, the neighbourhood however remark that the reason in fact is that he had been brutally assaulted by the police and he was trying to flee from them in fright.
Gayan, the 32 year old deceased who was working at a garage in Pasyala had been in the process of going home which was in Attanagalla on a motor cycle after finishing work when he had knocked against a small lorry at Pasyala Junction. Because of this accident the lorry sustained some minor damages and the lorry driver blamed Gayan saying that it happened because of Gayan who rode the motor cycle and an exchange of words had taken place between the two. Subsequently the lorry driver had taken steps to phone the police and when the officers of the traffic division of Pasyala Police arrived there Gayan was handed over to them. Eye witnesses say that at that point they saw the police beating Gayan.
At that moment Gayan had taken to his heels in fear of the police. Gayan who climbed a balcony of a three-storeyed building which was about a 100 metres from that spot immediately had walked over to the other side of the balcony assuming that he would be pursued by the police and had then tried to get down from the other side of the building. How he arrives at the balcony and how he tries to jump from there is recorded in the CCTV camera of that house.
Not being able to assess properly the height of the place where he would drop when jumping from the balcony there, he had fallen down having jumped down immediately from the third floor. Later, on investigations, the police were able to find that the youth who fled from them had died on the other side of the building. This unanticipated death of Gayan had occured as a result of the darkness of the night or because of his drunkenness as the police say.
The deceased Gayan is a married person and he had faced this incident when on his way to his wife's house in Attanagalla.
The police who express their ideas about the incident say that the youth was intoxicated and this accident had occured when fleeing from their grip.
