A Mahinda conspiracy behind ....
parliament treasury bills not being passed?
The proposal brought forward in parliament yesterday (07) in connection with issueing
treasury bills amounting to 40,000 crores being defeated has given rise to a rumour within political circles that there are powers of conspiracy lurking behind this matter.
This proposal had been presented in order to obtain permission to secure financial provisions for the government to obtain extra treasury bills worth Rs. 400 billion. There were 31 votes in favour and 52 votes against this proposition. The Minister of Finance had introduced this proposal in order to increase the amount of loans from Rs. 850 billion to Rs. 1,250 billion thus boosting it by Rs. 400 more billions by issueing these treasury bills.
It was Minister Ravi Karunanayaka who initially made the allegation that other optional or minor Parties who are within and without the parliament who are that are behind this defeat trying to bring back ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa into power. Minister Ravi Karunanayaka has later mentioned at a media briefing that behind this defeat is a crafty strategy of Mahinda Rajapaksa behind it but that there would be no influence whatsoever on the onward march of the government by defeating the Bill. He also stated that it is the economy of the poor people who will be affected by this defeat and that it is the members of the Opposition who voted against who are responsible for it.
Even at the time when this proposal was being presented to parliament the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayaka and the leaders of the United National Party the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingha were not present and a proposal to warrant a necessity of a vote was brought by member of parliament Ajith Kumara. In the process, member of parliament Dinesh Gunawardena had said that the government should resign based on this defeat.
