We didn't eat human flesh, dog flesh, serpent flesh!
Buddha didn't ask monks not to eat meat!
Pitiduwe Siridhamma Thero replies
Pitiduwe Siridhamma Thero's birthday party which was held at Shri Sadaham Ashram in
Dehiwala recently created a great sensation among the public in the newspapers as well as in website reports. The fact that various types of meat were served at that party to the monks in buffet style with the food being served by females aroused criticism among some. Asgiri Maha Nayaka Thero too had made a speech sometime back criticising this act. Pitiduwe Siridhamma Thero who conducted a sermon at his ashram day-before-yesterday on Poya (5) after these incidents, gave his replies to these criticisms. He explained in this sermon that monks eating meat is not approved by the Buddha which he said is only an opinion of stupid people.
This is how he expressed these ideas. "When monks partake of fish and meat .... we also know. What that Maha Nayaka Thero said was true .... it was on the sly that they ate .... yes, we know ... not that we do those things without knowing ... because I have been in this Sasana as a bhikku for 15 years and as a layman have searched about the Sasana for 26 years. I am not just a fool. I thought from the time I was small why these monks eat on the sly. In the Buddhist doctrine it is mentioned that a monk should refrain from eating only 10 types of meat .... elephant meat, human flesh, dog flesh, serpent flesh, flesh of bears, that of the lion, tiger etcetera. Apart from that, it has been preached that 'thri kotika parishuddha' flesh is suitable. That means, killing should not be done for that monk. When danaya is brought here, nobody can kill animals with the idea that it is for this danaya here. But can go to the market or any required place ... check and if a killed item is wanted .... can be prepared and given for the danaya. There's nothing wrong with that. Next .... it is said in the Sheela Senadhipathi Suttra that when serving the Gautama Buddha with pork, people have gone on a procession. I thought that the people of Sri Lanka are intelligent. That procession went again, no ... at that time also those people were just like that .... today too it's the same .... but we're going ahead with the philosophical revolution that is necessary in society.
