Wimal Weeravansha's hamine arrested!
Parliament member Wimal Weerawansha's wife, Sashi Weerawansha has been taken into custody by the CID last evening at about 7 when she was under treatment at a private hospital in Malabe. The CID has entered the hospital armed with a court warrant and in order to confirm whether she had admitted herself to
hospital with the purpose of actually seeking treatment or otherwise. Therefore she had been produced before a judicial medical officer last night for a check up for his confirmation. A statement has still not been received from her.
During the period Wimal Weerawansha was holding the portfolio of the Construction Ministry, his wife is alleged to have misused the powers afforded to members of his family to possess a travel passport by providing false information by utilising two different years of birth as well as two different names with the objective of securing various privileges.
This incident of providing false information was revealed many years prior to this; however, the police had kept on postponing taking proper action on this issue until Rajapaksa regime came to an end. Whatever it is, though news was publicized by the media sometime back, the police have not taken any interest in taking Wimal's wife into custody. In the meantime what Wimal said at the rally held in Nugegoda last 18th was "they say that our hamine will be arrested today .... tomorrow .... not even a soul comes .... doesn't even ask for a statement .... if they're asking, we are waiting to give it!" What the police say is that that statement had been made with the intention of leading them astray. The police further said that by that time Wimal's wife had disappeared and that though the police were searching for her for some weeks she had fled from the Kaduwela home where she is. The police even suspected that Wimal had sent his wife away from home on purpose. It was in this manner that newspapers flashed the news on Saturday that Wimal's wife had vanished. That very same day Wimal replying to this news had said over his website that though the police had come to his house and office in Battaramulla after the Nugegoda rally was over and had made a request asking his wife to present herself at the CID, she has produced a medical report through a lawyer as she was in an indisposed condition. He had also said that the CID had agreed to the suggestion of coming at a future date to give a statement. Wimal had stated in his website that his wife's condition had aggravated. According to what Wimal Weerawansha had said, it was not reported that the CID had come in search of her and had turned back and gone away while the Police Media Spokesman said that she had fled and had been in hiding. It was in this manner that on a tip off received by the Criminal Investigation Department that she was taken into custody last evening (22) at approximately 7. She had been arrested in accordance with clause 45 of the Emigration and Immigration Act.
According to investigations, 3 police teams had gone to the house to take her into custody a few days ago and they had said that she was not available in the house. A wide-scale search had been conducted to arrest her under such circumstances.
After having been arrested, she is still under treatment at the hospital under police protection, and it is understood that a decision would be arrived at after the judicial medical officer is to assess her health condition that night and forward the report.
