Friends who betrayed bosom friend who went for a bath and drown .... flee by hiding his clothes!
Friendships have now become a cause for destruction of human values these days. It is reported from Polgasowita area of three bosom friends who fled home after burying their dead friend's clothes because of fear that they had to tell their home-people when this friend of theirs drowned and died; all having gone together for a bath. What they had told their friends' parents was that he had been in their company and had later gone somewhere and that they do not know what happened after that.
A person in a lorry travelling towards Kahatuduwa along the expressway on 29th morning had noticed a dead body floating on Rilagala Canal flowing by the side of the Kahatuduwa Access Point. After informing about this, the deceased's body was found. The corpse was found about 2 kms down from the place where he got down into the water. The deceased is a schoolboy named Hashan Vimukthi of 14 years of age living in Polgasowita area.
On 27th Saturday Hashan had gone with three friends to have a bath in Polgasowita Rilagala Canal; but as he had not returned with the friends, his home-people had asked them at which point they had explained: "He was with us and went away early .... don't know where he went".
As the householders had got upset over this statement, the mystery of the boy's disappearance was conveyed to the police and the media.
Knowing very well as to what had happened to the friend, the friends had thought about their ownselves and kept the secret about the death to themselves.
It was on 25th night that everyone came to know about Hashan's death according to the tip-off provided by the lorry driver on the expressway. It was revealed that the friends had lied, on investigations carried out by the police in this connection.
They then even showed the spot where they hid the deceased friend's clothes. They confessed that they wove this story being frightened that if they told that Hashan died, there would be problems for them. When the body of Hashan was discovered, it was bloated and distorted.
When Tharindu his best friend and living closest to his house who had joined on this journey, the father having observed how he was answering in a suspected manner and then having asked him repeatedly as to what happened to the friend, he had even placed his hands on Hashan's father's head and sworn saying: "He only went to the pharmacy and came .... don't know after that father".
The deceased Hashan Vimukthi studying in Grade 10 of Piliyandala Dharmaraja Vidyalaya has one elder sister.
Though the three friends who went with Hashan realised that it was beyond rescue after he was carried away by the waters, next decided to beat a retreat without telling anybody about the incident. The clothes and slippers which were placed near the canal before he went into bathe were buried by them by the side of the canal and after hiding the phone, it too was disconnected.
If this death kept a secret by these bosom friends did not come to light in a random way, this incident may have remained a mystery upto now.
