Venuja also has another brother. Teacher Mr. V.L. Dharmasiri is in charge of Venuja's class. This is what Venuja Nimsun says: "There's no TV in our house .... only the radio is there. So I was always engaged in studies. I even was not interested in watching TV. I read some newspapers including Vijaya. I didn't attend extra classes. I went for an English class. I did my class-work without feeling it was a burden. My parents and teachers directed me towards studies only. I did sports and Art well. What I ask from young sisters and young brothers is .. to study well and to become a winner like me. My future hopes is to study well and to become an Engineer".

This is what the mother of the child, Mrs. P.K. Atapattu said: "Both I and my husband provided all facilities towards the child's education. We didn't always make him study by force ... we allowed him to do his studies in freedom. He used to make playhouses and played with his only younger brother. He's good in extra-curricular activities also. Played games. We are happy about this success as parents".

Placed Second in the 5th Scholarship Exam this time with 198 marks is H.N. Malaka Nethmal Thillakarathna of Rajakiya Kanishta Prathamika Vidyalaya in Polonnaruwa.

Student Malaka lives in Udawela Road, New Town, Polonnaruwa and his father Mr. Gayan Chaminda Thillakarathna is employed with the Sri Lanka Navy while his mother is a housewife.

This is what Malaka Nethmal spoke about his success: "I didn't think that I'll become Second. But I was overjoyed. I prepared myself for the Scholarship the way my class-teacher told me. My mother and father also helped me. Someday I would like to become a doctor".

Mrs. Iresha Nilmini expressed her ideas about her child's success this way: "I didn't think that my son would become Second in the whole island. But I knew he'd pass the Scholarship. My son studied well even after coming back from school. Our child who lives in a remote area like Polonnaruwa achieving success like this is an honour to the Rajakiya Kanishta Vidyalaya also".

Sahani Yashodara achieved Third position out of the two who came to that position in the Year 5 Scholarship Exam by securing 197 marks.

Sahani who studies at Gampaha Bemmulla Pitiyegedera Kanishta Vidyalaya has this to say about her success: "I had a big belief that I would pass this Scholarship Exam in a big way.

I get up at 4 early morning and study. Only after studying like that I go to school. I play a little in the evening and after that I study. Can't say when I finish studying. I study till I understand well. Our class-teacher Sujeewa Samanpriya Sir took a lot of trouble to teach us.

My mother and father both told me .... 'learn well ... what will remain is only that'. When I went for the exam .... as soon as I took the question paper into my hands .... the first question itself was one which I had read previously from books. I felt very happy. I knew the answers to all the questions. That was the result of reading books.

Principal Asela Indika Sir showed us the proper way to proceed and helped us to study well. My future hope is to become an Engineer".

Sahani's father too is a teacher of a pirivena. The mother is an Assistant Manager of the Ministry of Health.

Sahani's mother Mrs. M. Wijayalatha said: "My daughter gives first place to studies. This daughter is very devoted to religion. She of course doesn't watch TV.

Fathima's only brother too has passed the Scholarship and is also studying at Zahira Vidyalaya. He is preparing to sit for the O/L this time.

Fathima has acquired the highest aggregate in a sense; 197 marks which a student of the Tamil stream has so far not got before. Mohammed Niswar Fathima's mother is M. Rajvunniya. She is a housewife. Mohammed Niswar, Fathima's father is employed in the Kingdom of Qatar.

Fathima speaks about her success in the following manner: "I didn't think that I'll be successful this time. I honestly am happy that I came First in the Tamil medium in the whole of the island .... thus bringing honour to my Zahira Vidyalaya. I didn't dedicate myself in a special way as such for the exam. I did the daily school-work after school was over. By 9 in the night I would as a habit go to bed and used to getup at 5.30 early morning. I am happy about the success. Someday I hope to become a doctor".

Fathima who made no special dedication for the Scholarship examination had in fact enjoyed herself by walking around Mawanella Town with her father just the day before the exam, having known that she would be highly successful at the exam. Her mother said that the father had taken Fathima on a trip to Nuwara Eliya the day after the exam because he knew that she would pass the exam with flying colours. Her mother says that he had developed that faith after seeing how his daughter was preparing for the exam.
