
According to the latest circulars issued by the Ministry of Power and Energy, only the Net Plus methodology has been made mandatory for all newly acquired solar panel connections under the National Electricity Policy, which came into effect on March 05, 2026. It has been decided not to offer the previously used Net Metering and Net Accounting methodologies to new consumers, and it has been stipulated that existing agreements must mandatorily convert to the Net Plus system when their terms expire and are extended.
The 'Net Plus' methodology, which operates for consumers who generate electricity using rooftop solar panels, is a program where the entire electricity capacity produced by the system is directly supplied to the national electricity grid. Here, the consumer receives a fixed income for the amount of electricity units supplied, while a separate bill must be paid in the usual manner for the electricity consumed daily at home. In this process, electricity generation and consumption are calculated independently, without being interconnected.
Under the new policy, the maximum duration of a contract for solar panel connections is limited to 12 years, and the installation of a remotely operable smart meter is mandatory for every system. This modern technology will allow consumers to more accurately monitor the amount of electricity they generate. The main advantage here is receiving a fixed tariff (Feed-in Tariff) for the total units produced, regardless of the household's electricity consumption. In addition to these advantages, some limitations and risks can also be identified within the Net Plus methodology. Regardless of the available roof space, consumers are not permitted to install a system larger than the capacity limit (Contract Demand Limit) approved by the Electricity Board. Furthermore, if national electricity tariffs increase in the future, it will directly impact the household's electricity bill, and under this system, there is no ability to continuously receive electricity at home during a power outage without a special battery system.
