Negombo courts yesterday heard the case of a 35 year old man who had been having marital relationships with an underaged girl for a period of time by isolating her from her mother. He had been maintaining this association by giving family planning pills for a period of about 3 years.

The suspect had been loaning money on interest as an occupation and the girl under reference has no father and as such she lives with her mother.

The girl's mother had visited the Ja Ela police and had requested the police officers to discipline her child because she was stubborn and aggressive and had on certain occasions been going away from home without informing her. Subsequently when the police questioned her, she revealed information about the connection she had with the suspect.

it was later exposed that the suspect had been in and out of the house of this girl to attend to a certain transaction for a period of time and he had got friendly with the girl and later had invited her to certain locations that he had suggested. It was after that, that he had tackled her for his illicit sex activities. The girl too had willingly consented to his advances and had wife - husband relationships. In the process he had introduced family planning pills to her saying, "if you take these pills there won't be a problem". As such, for about a 3 year period of time she had secretly been going out to meet the suspect secretly to meet him and engage in the said activities unknown even to her mother.

Subsequently the suspect has been remanded for having maintained an illicit affair with a minor.

Negombo Chief Magistrate Mr. A.M.N.P. Amarasingha who refused bail, ordered that the suspect be remanded till May 28th.
