Russian Tourist Drowns at Hikkaduwa Beach: Safety Measures Urged

A 38-year-old Russian engineer tragically drowned yesterday (February 21) at Narigama Beach, Hikkaduwa, according to police reports. The tourist had arrived in Sri Lanka two weeks ago with his wife to celebrate their honeymoon.

According to lifeguards, the victim was caught in a strong current while swimming. A tour guide, witnessing the incident, immediately jumped into the water in an attempt to save him. However, the tourist was initially missing, and after an extensive search, he was found gripping a rock at the seabed.

Despite the efforts of the rescue team to bring him to shore, he was confirmed dead upon retrieval. His body was transported to Balapitiya Hospital last night, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled for today.

Hikkaduwa police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Call for Stronger Safety Measures

As tourism expands, experts emphasize the urgent need for a comprehensive coastal safety assessment. WD Luxman, a health and safety expert, stated that authorities should install warning signs and deploy additional lifeguards in high-risk areas to prevent such tragedies.
