Unfortunate death of mother in Badulla

Pregnant woman dies ....
because hospital staff was watching cricket match
The husband of a 32 year old woman who died after being admitted to Badulla General Hospital for delivering her baby had complained to the Director of the hospital and Badulla police saying that her death was due to negligence on the part of the staff at the ward concerned. While the Sri Lanka - England cricket match played last 27th was a great moment for Sri Lanka, members of the staff

who were engrossed on the match had failed to attend to this patient who was in a serious condition and as a result she had died unfortunately ; husband of the deceased complained.

The deceased in this instance is Mrs. Pradeepika Nilanthi, a resident of Rubberwaththa division in Landewela, Udakohowila. Though her baby has been born as a normal child, it is revealed from initial evidence that nobody had cared to attend to the mother at the time the child was born. While the mother died as a result of the incident, the Infant Unit in the hospital, the child is in a serious condition.

This is what husband Senaka of the deceased had to say: "I am employed as a baas. I went to hospital after work. She was simply lying on a bed. Though she was in a serious condition, nobody cared to attend to her. When I asked from the nurse, she said, "That's the way ... patients get serious ... w'll look after her". I then went near my wife and had a look ... she was bleeding like water from a tap. I then removed the sheet. The nurse once again said, "Such situations are like that .... we'll look after .." and she asked me to leave.

When I went in the morning, my wife was not to be seen. I wasn't even told where the patient was. They were not aware. Only later I came to know that my wife was dead. The body was at the mortuary.

When I met the doctor, what he said was hat she had had a heart attack and died because of pressure. But she had nothing of that sort .... she was quite alright.

I came to know from two people who were near the mortuary that they had not paid attention to my wife. They had been watching the match that night. Her life could have been saved if attention had been paid at the time I told them. But they  haven't done so. I told the police that I have a suspicion about the death. The baby is still in a serious state. It was informed that the baby was born under normal conditions.Nobody had paid attention .... she had bled profusely that time and finally died".

Further investigations are being conducted in this relation.
