J'Pura medical student's suicide -- UPDATES

J'Pura medical student who jumped the train at Wellawatta ...
because of a lie told by former lover...

Investigations conducted so far reveal that the undergraduate of 2nd Year Medical Faculty of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura had unfortunately committed suicide on March 28th afternoon near Ramakrishna Road, Wellawatta by jumping in front of a moving train as a result of being disappointed over a lie told by her former lover that he was going to get married to another girl.

The deceased is a 22 year old medical student, Kavindi Yashoda Jayawardena.

Her parents who are doctors are presently attached to the Colombo General Hospital and Lady Ridgeway Hospital.

Nobody was aware that the deceased who was a resident at Epitamulla Road, Pita Kotte would go to Wellawatta and commit a tragedy of this nature.

On the day of the accident,

she had jumped in front of a train which was travelling from Matara to Anuradhapura at a certain point in Wellawatta and the body had been totally crushed nd she had died on the spot.

It was learnt from investigations conducted across her mobile phone that the reason for suicide was connected to a problem concerning a love affair ... detected from the last phone calls she had received. She has sent her last SMS messages to the boy in question, one Yasiru Malshan Kumarapperuma.

Though there were obstacles against their romance, it had been going on for a period of over 2 years against objections by her parents. However, Kavindi had not dismissed him from her mind.

Yasiru who is employed at a private bank gave the following evidence at the post mortem in relation to the incident in the following manner:
"I came to know the deceased Kavindi at my A/L private classes. She is younger to me by 4 months. We had a love affair from June 2011. By November 2013 her parents objected to our association. She passed her A/Ls and entered the Medical Faculty. I went into employment in a private bank.

Because of her parent's objections during our romance, we both decided to separate from each other. I gave my wholehearted consent to it. In the meantime I came to know that she was carrying on with another student at Jayawardenepura University. I came to know about it from several sources. But I didn't inquire about it from her. However, some days back I was able to notice that she alone was dancing with a boy at a birthday party of one of her friends in the facebook and  I asked her about it. She said that she did so to hurt me. On the day before her death, on the night of March 27th she spoke to me for the last time. Then I told her that I would be starting an affair with another girl and that I would marry her. I said so with the intention of creating a distance between the two of us. On 28th morning around 11.58 she had sent me an SMS. That SMS said that she is standing in front of the Wellawatta railway track. I had a suspicion of about 50 to 50 per cent that she was going to do something.I tried to give her a call ... but she had disconnected her phone. Later I came to know that she had jumped in front of a moving train".

The post mortem on her was conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer of Kalubowila Hospital, Ruchira Nadeera and Inquirer into Sudden Deaths of Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Mrs.Rodrigo who after considering evidence and medical reports returned a verdict of suicide committed by jumping in front of a moving train.
