Intrepid guard foils Kirullapona Seylan Bank robbery

Kirullapona Seylan Bank robbery foiled ....
because security fired at helmet-clad robbers
Two armed robbers who had barged into Seylan Bank, Kirullapona yesterday (23) afternoon had beat a retreat as a result of firing by security guards.

It is understood that because of this firing of gun shots which took place around 1.30 in the afternoon,

customers who had come to the bank as well as people in the town were stricken with fear. As the robbery attempt misfired, the robbers who got confused had left behind the motor cycle on which they came and had got hold of a motor cycle belonging to another and had fled the scene with their motor cycle still lying there at the scene of the robbery.

As police had been informed that nobody could enter an office of a bank or finance institution with faces covered and wearing helmets, the attempt of robbery in this case failed.

Security officers had not given permission to the two individuals to enter the bank and had come in the afternoon with their helmets covering the face according to instructions they have received, at that point the two robbers had pushed aside the two security personnel and tried to gain entry to the bank.

A security guard who noticed that one of the robbers had a revolver in his possession had wrestled with a robber. The other security guard had promptly got into action and had shot the robbers with his weapon. The two robbers who got upset at the sound of gun-shots had run away from the bank, leaving aside their job of robbing the bank. One robber had then pulled out a revolver from his pocket and had beat a retreat and in the process had dropped a Rs. 2000 cash note on the ground.

The robbers who ran out of the bank during this commotion were unable to locate their own motor bicycle and as a result had got hold of somebody else's motor bicycle and fled on it.

A glass of the bank had been damaged as a result of gun shots fired by one security guard. A small piece of glass had struck an eye of one of the security guards.

Police say that because of the intelligent move made by the security guards in this manner in which they acted, the plan of the robbery had misfired.

Till last evening no information has been received regarding this attempt for robbery.

In the process, another incident was reported of a case where a group of robbers with faces covered had robbed a sum of 7 lakhs yesterday from  the CDB Bank in Moratuwa after threatening members of the staff there.
