to kill and bury wife and infant
Second marriage of both parties
A man who was digging a pit in the hall of his house with the motive of burying his cute little baby 1 month and a week old with his wife was taken into custody by Milleniya police yesterday (28).
The suspect who was drunk had started a quarrel with his wife on 27th morning and had said that he would kill them and bury them and that he would afterwards kill himself. He had then prevented the wife from going out of the house and had started digging a pit; but on 28th afternoon the wife has somehow or other managed to find a way of escaping from the suspect and had left the infant in the house and proceeded to the police station and unravelled the incident that took place. Thus she was able to save her life.
When the police arrived on the scene, a pit of five and a half feet and three feet wide had been dug inside the house and the earth removed had been strewn across the pit. Apart from this, a rope had been tied onto a beam of the house. The police were able to rescue the infant and bring the child to the police station.
The suspect who was taken into custody was one B.Ravindra Kumara (42), living down 1st Lane, Kurunduwatta, Bellantudawa, Ragama.
Milleniya police yesterday (28) arrested a man who had dug a pit in his own house with the idea of murdering his wife and infant and afterwards burying them there.
This couple living in Bellantudawa, Ragama, Milleniya have both been married before and this happened to be their second marriage of which an infant was born .... now aged one month and 7 days.
The wife had come to Milleniya police yesterday (28) morning and complained that she was being harassed by the husband. In the meantime, the husband too had come to the police station and lodged a complaint that his wife had isolated the baby, leaving the house.
While the pit dug in the hall was to be seen, a rope with a noose also was observed from above in the hall in addition to a ladder placed nearby to gain access to the top. A woman in the neighbourhood giving evidence regarding the incident said that she had come to this house the day-before-yesterday and has spoken to the suspect. She had asked for what purpose the pit was being dug; but had not received an answer from him. She also said that when she came yesterday and queried what this pit was, she was shown the wife and baby and was told that it was for the purpose of laying the two of them in that pit.
Milleniya police are conducting further investigations in this connection.
