How Ginger, Gayesha and Ruwanthi were stripped off from Colombo
Higher-ups of the UNFA has by now decided not to give nominations to 2 actresses and a female vocalist for the forthcoming Western Province elections and they were artistes who were subjected to much controversy recently.
Gayesha who had become a revolutionary character on the screen for having portrayed a sexual scene in the film 'Igilena maluwo'; Ruwanthi Mangala who for sometime had become a character for portraying attractive
roles and Ginger who became a popular character on the musical stage have all been stripped off from this election battle.
It is learnt that the reason for this is that though the limits for female nominees for the UNFA this time from Colombo was 3, the Party has no room to accommodate or increase it to 6. Assuch, the 3 female nominees for this time's elections will be daughters of seniors of the Party, Hirunika Premachandra, Masha Cumaranatubga and former parliamentarian Ashoka Lankatillaka.
Political sources say that the memer of parliament who had introduced Ginger and Ruwanthi to contest from Kolonnawa has been asked to propose the names of 2 male nominees instead.
Various types of talk that spread around across the internet last week about Gayesha, Ginger and Ruwanthi in the media and the criticisms aimed at them had gone so far as to reach the ears of the President, it is reported.
In the recent past, the Gen. Sec. of the Party, Min. Maithreepala Sirisena had to face cogents from various quarters of the Party about criticisms aimed at the the contestants' qualifications or suitability. It was revealed at these criticisms that they have 'sold' the names of the President, member of parliament, Namal Rajapaksha and certain other parliamentarians and Ministers saying at various places that they were to get nominations for sure.
Under these circumstances, this information has been inquired by Minister Maithreepala Sirisena over the telephone from the President as well as parliamentarian Namal and what the President had said was that he he had not mentioned the name of anybdy and had further instructed not to enlist anybody without qualifications and that he too had had come to know this from the newspapers. Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksha too had said that he did not know about this situation and to investigate as to who it is that is 'selling' his name.
Finally, Minister Maithreepala had spoken to members of the nominations committee and had arrived at a decision about deciding on the limits in this connection. Consequently, the 2 actresses and the singer have been thrown out from the election battle.
