Unfortunate incident at Deniyaya school

Student who jumped down from top floor .....
frightened of Principal!

An unfortunate incident is reported from Matara where an O/L student had jumped from the first floor of the school building,in fright when the Principal Madam of the school had been chasing this student to beat him up. The student is now supposed to be in an invalid state.

Seeing a few students who had stayed back in the classroom disregarding a call by this Principal to attend a funeral, it is understood that she had lost her temper and had been chasing behind the students with the motive of beating them.

The student who is thus incapacitated with a broken leg is M.K. Lahiru Madusankha (16), a student studying in grade 10 of a maha vidyalaya 5 miles away from Matara town belonging to Deniyaya area in Matara district and a resident of Pillahena, Denkandaliya, Rotumba.

The initial operation performed on the student has not been successful and as a consequence, doctors of the hospital are now hoping to conduct a second surgery.

The elder brother of the victim has this to say regarding the incident: "Principal madam had asked the students to attend the funeral ceremony of a person connected to a school-teacher in Ehelakanda area. We told our younger brother not to attend funerals because he was wearing a talisman. That may be the reason why he didn't go.

At that moment this Principal madam who came to the class asked why students are not going for the funeral and had reprimanded the students threatening them going behind them and chasing behind them with the idea of beating them. Then he had jumped from the first floor where the students were. It was then that my younger brother's leg had broken. What we have come to know is that when he was fallen on the ground, Principal madam had hit him with a PVC pipe.

Though the parents of the injured victim had had taken steps to complain of this incident to the police, at a later date the parents had been approached by several provincial council political leaders during evening hours at the parents' house and had made an influence on them to withdraw the complaint made to the police regarding the injured child. Though a sum of Rs. 50,000 had been offered, the parents have not agreed to accept the payment.

Accordingly, what the parents say is that though more than a week has elapsed after the incident, not even a single teacher of the school had cared to visit the victim in hospital.

The Human Rights Commission had been informed about this and the Principal has been produced before courts and now released on bail.
