Sugar kilo - 18
Salmon tin - 105
Milk powder - 350
Government that taxes ''Hodda' of people
Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, member of parliament had revealed at a meeting held recently that even though no government in the world has imposed tax on consumer items, the Sri Lankan government has taxed the people by putting severe pressure on them by levying taxes on the 'hodda' of the people.
He said this by quoting from a list of items which he had in his position, as imposed by the last budget.
"No other country levies taxes on consumer items. It is consumer items that are given at the lowest price in every country. I have the list of items of the last budget with me. Remember .... a tax of Rs. 18 has to be paid for a kilo of sugar. If one goes to buy 500 grams of sugar .... a tax of Rs. 9 has to be paid to the government. A tax of Rs. 25 has to be paid for a kilo of big onions. If one buys 500 grams of big onions. 12.50 has to be paid to the government.
A tax of Rs. 105 is imposed on a big salmon tin. A kilo of milk powder is taxed by Rs. 350. A tax of Rs. 202 is levied on a kilo of coriander ... a kilo of saffron powder is taxed at Rs. 501 per kilo .... for cummin seeds, the tax is Rs. 180 per kilo and a tax of Rs. 305 for Undu flour. Now what has been done? This is a government that has hit the society and public to their 'hodda!'
