Why was A330 tele-drama stopped on
Sri Lankan protest at last moment ....
when ready for exhibition?
Producer and director explains matters to Gossip Lanka
A problem has emerged in respect of the taboo made on the latest teledrama of Chamara Janaraj by the name of A330. The basis for this was the portrayal of a uniform similar to the official uniform of the female staff of Sri Lankan Airways and
the official logo which was considered as something that would damage the occupational reputation with the related trade union staging a protest in this regard.
When the pre-broadcast clips of this teledrama was scheduled to begin on ITN rupavahini channel last 25th of January, the pre-broadcast clips of the teledrama too had gone over the air while some websites including Facebook had published clips about it.
The teledrama had quite unexpectedly stopped after a request made on the ITN through the President of their trade union by initiating a protest even when the selecting committee of the ITN had granted approval. On an inquiry made in this respect by Gossip Lanka, the producer and the director had expressed their views. The teledrama director Shan Kumara Ratnayaka expressed his views in this manner:
"This is our 26th production. Our new drama A330 was approved by two boards under certain amendments of the ITN. This is a story about an airport and nobody had made something like this before. Because of that, we wanted to produce this. All this happened because the drama director attempted giving an unnecessary propaganda. As far as I have been informed, photos had been published in the Facebook and had engaged in a chat with various individuals. Information of how certain scenes that were there and later taken off had leaked out. The union people had got upset over that. As producer of the drama we are facing great inconvenience. Now we are hoping to explain matters about this controversy to trade unions of Sri Lankan Airways.
Chamara Janaraj Pieris, director of the drama had this to say regarding the issue:
@I wanted to do a story on a Sri Lankan airport. The reason is because the airport is still distant to Sri Lankan people. What I wanted was to bring this closer to the people and to instil a desire in them towards this and thus create a positive drama. To develop the drama, it is necessary to bring out incidents surrounding it. The other thing is that it was approved by two independent boards, and in the same way, we had to get the proper sanction from necessary places to carry out shooting at the airports and the correct payments were made in that respect.
Some people said that unnecessary propaganda was done in this connection. It happened like this. Before this I did Piyavi Yaya 04 drama. In those dramas and copies there was a good response. There are those who show a favourable criticism appreciating my ideas. I communicated about this with them. No clips with wrong intentions were publicized.
In shoots, we take normal photos. Of course that is something that anybody does. This was a total of 80 sections and 10 have been shot. I am thinking of settling the issues at hand and start shooting again in March. I hope this will be soled soon".
