Are these the type of people who did the Katine?
28 year old attendant who died ...
because of neglect of Colombo National Hospital
A restlessness has taken place a few days ago among hospital workers because of lack of proper to an attendant who had later passed away without proper treatment. The reason behind this has been that female duty officers at ward 30 where the deceased worked had not approved her leave at a time where she worked had not approved her leave and at a time when she had been given a rough treatment neglecting her by not even admitting her to the ICU when her condition was serious.
Deepika Priyadarshini Karaliyedda the deceased was 28 years old, unmarried and a resident at Biso Bandara area in Medirigiriya.
A protest has been launched to the effect that this neglect has occurred because she was a minor employee as an attendant of a lower grade in the hospital. A poster campaign is to be seen as a result of this protest. Among the posters so displayed and can be seen are the following:
* No ICU for small people
* Person who died ... died, so says 30
* It is good that she died today ... instead of the Katina date ... so says 30
* Is this the way Katine was done?
A group of junior assistants had this to say:
"Deepika has applied for leave. However, without approving her leave, she had been detailed for the night shift at a time when she was suffering from dengue fever. She had even been treated harshly".
Hospital authorities also protest over the fact that she had not been properly treated at ward 56 where she had undergone medical treatment for dengue fever.
"Deepika is one of our sister workers who did good work at ward 30. Even when she was suffering from dengue, she worked the night shift at the hospital. Deepika had applied for leave from the Sister of the ward but she had not wanted to grant Deepika leave. After Deepika became serious only she had been admitted to ward 56. Is it because we are minor employees that Deepika was not admitted to the ICU even when she was in a serious state?
It is at a moment like this that humanity is necessary. But authorities of ward 56 have not cared about it. If she had been cared for properly ... she would still be living among us. We have informed about this to the Director through the hospital Secretary. If our sister had been paid proper attention, a tragedy like this would not have occurred in this case. If things are such for hospital employees, how would they treat the normal patient!
The Sister of ward 30 has said that it is good that our sister died today .... that if she died yesterday, all activities of her Katine would end in confusion. Are these the type of people who are recruited for duty in the hospital? People who have no human feelings! The Lord Buddha has spoken about something called Ditta Dhammavedaniya Karma. They will carry those with them!"
Doctors have mentioned that they are unable to respond to hospital employees who target their allegations against ward 56 without permission from those of higher authority.
In the meantime, Minister of Health, Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena has issued a special announcement last night that a decision has been taken, calling for an inquiry to investigate about this allegation.
