Murderers of Tissa Abeysekera's mother-in-law .... identified from CCTV,
Doubt as to why necklace was not stolen
Rida Margaret Fernando, mother of reputed Late Mr. Tiss Abeysekera's wife was found mysteriously murdered in a room in her house in Rajagiriya last morning. At the time of the incident, 84 year old Rita Margaret Fernando had been alone in the house. As there had been no response from her phone, her daughter had come to the house only to find Mrs. Rida lying dead on a bed in the house, having been murdered.
There were no signs of wound marks on Mrs. Rida's body and it was reported that the gold necklace round her neck had been intact. The police were able to detect that articles in the house had been in disarray leading to the assumption that something in particular had been searched for.
She had been murdered mysteriously in a room in a house which was adjoining a number of other houses of the elite-class down 5th Lane, Moragasmulla, Rajagiriya. However, by this time a number of important clues in the form of evidence have been revealed to the police which incidentally are connected to the murder which were found on examination of the CCTV cameras installed at premises of other houses.
These security tapes give evidence of 2 individuals who have entered the house concerned. It was reported that there were scenes recorded on the cameras of these men climbing over the wall in front of Mrs. Rida's house day-before-yesterday around 8 in the night. The security cameras have further displayed scenes of 2 persons once again opening the gate and coming out of it at 11 in the night. Whatever it is, there is no evidence to say that the killers had opened the windows or had entered the house from the roof either. Therefore the police suspect that they had entered the house at some moment when the door of the house had been left open. It was reported that almirahs and various articles in the rooms of the house had been pulled out as well as the refrigerator and other items and articles in the kitchen.
Though it is suspected that a gang who had come for the purpose of looting valuables items in the house may have committed this murder, police have doubts as to why the necklace of the deceased had not been removed by them.
The deceased Rida Margaret Fernando (84) was a retired nurse and was the mother of 9 children. She happens to be the mother of Mrs. Asanka Monarawala Abeysekera who was the wife of Mr. Tissa Abeysekera. Four of Mrs. Rida's children are in Australia while the other 4 children are resident in Sri Lanka
Though Clarency Percy Fernando (86), the husband of Mrs. Rida had been living with one of the daughters in the Rajagiriya house where the murder took place, the day prior to the incident Mr. Fernando and this daughter had been on a visit to another daughter's house in Mabole for some necessity, and as a result Mrs. Rida has had to stay alone in the house that night. On phoning the mother who was alone in the house, the daughter concerned had received no response and had become worried. She had therefore arrived in the house of Mrs. Rida last (20th) morning at about 8 in the morning to find her mother lying dead on her bed. Later the police had been informed.
The preliminary Magisterial inquiry over the death of Mrs. Rida who was murdered was conducted by Fort Magistrate Mr. Thilina Gamage at the house of the deceased itself.
The police said that further investigations with the aid of the evidence provided by the CCTV are being conducted.
