We reported on a number of occasions of obstacles that could arise as a result of dogs straying around the Katunayaka expressway environment. However, on the occasion when the expressway was opened by the President, there were no dogs in sight.
The reason for it was that a day before the expressway was opened by the President the Road Development Authority had used a certain strategy to remove stray dogs from the environs.
After the private known as Animal Lovers Zone was informed about this issue, they had temporarily come up with a solution to the menace. It was that every dog found in the vicinity of the expressway was trapped with the use of nets and subsequently taken to another location. It is reported that about a hundred dogs were trapped on that occasion. It was further understood that the dogs were released after a sterilization surgery was performed on them.
Whatever it is, the problem in relation to stray dogs still crossing over from the Muthurajawela garbage hill area close to the expressway may exist further as a threat. If such solutions are not found from time to time in the future in connection with this issue, the issue of stray dogs on the expressway may crop up again.
