RAVINDU GUNAWARDENA ARRESTED

Vaas's son trapped this morning ... at Pepiliyana

     Police reports that former DIG Vaas Gunawardena's son Ravindu Gunawardena was trapped in the early hours of this morning at Pepiliyana.

     He has been so taken into custody to question him in relation to the murder of millionaire of businessman Mohammed Shyam of Bambalapitiya. That Ravindu, son of former DIG Vaas Gunawardena was involved in the murder of Mohammed Shyam personally and directly and that he had taken with him the weapon which was used in the shooting was informed to courts by the CID on 9th July.

     It was also said that the police had gone to the Dehiwala house on 3 previous occasions in order to take him into custody and that on those occasions Vaas Gunawardena's wife had created difficulties and obstructions over their duties. The CID further revealed to courts that this person called Shyamali Priyadarshani who was a severe obstacle to the duties of the CID had later spoken to her lawyers over the phone and finally on their instructions had provided the police access to the house to search for the suspect. The CID failing to find the suspect had then searched the house of his fiance; that too without success. These results were informed to courts by police.

    In the process when this case was called on the final day, it was announced that an investigation on a wide-scale was launched for Ravindu Gunawardena to be taken into custody and that the Kaduwela Magistrate had issued a warrant in courts for him to be arrested.

   The courts had issued an order to prohibit the suspect from leaving the country on the sly.
  
   Former DIG and 7 others are in remand over the murder of Mohammed Shyam. Ravindu Gunawardena has been identified as a suspect of this murder.
