Since the risk of global warming has kept on rising, the whole world including Sri Lanka has commemorated the earth hour for the year 2013 from 8.30 - 9.30 in the night on Saturday by switching off the lights with the intention of motivating the public to dedicate themselves to control burning of fossil fuel.
While national festivals were held on this occasion, it is a special feature to record that lights were switched off at the Derana News section of Derana TV News channel with news being broadcast with only candlelight.
The occasion had been commemorated also at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Tower of Big Ben in London, the Sydney Opera Theatre, the World Trade Centre in China and a number of other well-known locations around the world where lights were switched off.
