FIVE INJURED IN ASHOOTING AT GROWING UP CEREMONY

Because of a cigarette butt the father made the daughters growing up ceremony  to  a spraying of bullets party

Five in hospital for treatment for injuries sustained

At the attaining function of a daughter the father had got drunk which had resulted in five persons had received gunshot injuries and had to be hospitalised.
The  father is A.W Sumanaweerabandara a native of Niyadagala area in Buttala who had invited for his daughter’s attaining party his relatives and friends. Most of the relatives had lived in the vicinity and had rendered their fullest support of this attaining function to make the function a success.
The neighbours also had stayed till late night to enjoy a drink and to have a late dinner on that day. On that day the father Suraweerabandara had been over drinking, as his intention was to celebrate fully the attaining function of his daughter
It was during this time he had got entangled with a relative over a minor incident of a cigarette butt issue. Over this issue the two had been arguing for a long time creating a loud noise. At this time his wife who had been preparing meals had heard this argument had come to the scene had told “It is difficult to control him when he is after the influence of liquor”. She had told him to remain quiet.
 The host, the father of the attained girl got embarrassed over the scolding he received from his wife he had gone into a room and brought a gun and had shot his wife ,the person with whom he argued over that pity cigarette butt issue and the relatives. Some bullets had even had pierced through the wall of the house when the relatives had tried to stop his action.
There had a few service personnel in the party who had stopped his action and brought the incident under control. From the incident five persons, his wife, two relatives and two outsiders had got shot and injured.
The injured had been entered into the Moneragala hospital. Among them two had been in a critically injured state, had been transferred to the Badulla hospital. After the incident the suspect had been taken into custody by the Buttala Police. This incident had occurred on the 7th night.
The Buttala Police is conducting investigations in regard to the incident.
