The Buddha statue story of banning Buddhist statues in Iran is wrong:
We had misunderstood about it,’
Bodu Bala Sena’:
In the past few weeks it was heard via the media that the sales of Buddhist Statues in Iran had been banned. It was mentioned that in a country where only a few Buddhists, this decision had been taken by the Cultural Inheritance Department of Iran on behalf of the Islamic community living over there.
But the precise reason is that the Buddha statues have not been displayed prominently at appropriate places, which happens to be a disgrace for the Buddhism religion.
These distorted media reports have been made to create a misunderstanding among the two countries was disclosed by the Ambassadors of Sri Lanka in Iran Dr Mohamed Faisal Rafeek. This reason was however not accepted by many. In this regard the Ambassador has had a discussion yesterday with the Officials of the’ Bodu Bala Sena’ to explain clearly and to resolve this conflict amicably.
Subsequently a Leader of the ‘Bodu Bala Sena’ organisation Ven. Kirama Wimalajothi Thera had addressed at a media conference in this manner...
“It was emphasised for Buddhists living in Iran, they are prohibited of keeping Buddha statues in their possession. What Iran authorities have prohibited in only manufacturing Buddha statues in bulk and stacking them in an improper manner which was not an appropriate manner in keeping the stocks of Buddha statues. In this context the Buddhists in this country should not worry about this issue in Iran. The correct stand is absolutely this which he explained clearly. This is the reason the Buddhist monks of Bodu Bala Sena organisation were cordially invited to visit Iran. We have not taken a decision yet. But would take a decision in the near future.”
