Ranil will remain leader of UNP until the year 2018
At the annual Convention of the United National Party held on the 1st st December at the UNP Headquarters, the tenure of leadership of The UNP’s leader Ranil Wickremasinghe was extended by a period of another six years up tp the year 2018.During the voting 4641 members voted for the proposal while 337 had disagreed for this proposal.
However the Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Buddhika Pathirana and Thalatha Athukorale voted against the proposal.This proposal was made by the Member of Parliament Wijedasa Rajapaksa, while it was seconded by Member of Parliament Ajit P.Perera.
A series of other proposals was brought forward by Member of Parliament Mangala Samaraweera.They were seconded by Member of Parliament Dr Harsha de Silva.The Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa had said in his speech that in the event Ranil Wickremasinghe comes forward as the next presidential Candidate he will lend his fullest support to him.He also stressed that the common candidate concept should not come in.
Member of Parliament had explained about the radical changes that have been proposed.These were seconded by Dr Harsha de Silva.
The ‘SIRASA’ media was not allowed to cover the proceedings of the convention.A large cotingent of media personnel from the ‘SIRASA’ were outside the premises of the UNP Headquarters.It is reported that they had made a huge protest in this regard.
