PANADURA MUREDER’S HELICOPTER HONEYMOON

Insurance Agent who has committed a murder to fulfill his wish to fly on a helicopter for his honeymoon

We have heard many stories of robbers who disguise themselves as Insurance agents and come to homes to kill inmates and take all cash and jewelry. Police was able to catch the murderer who had been an Insurance agent of Sarath Ranawaka who had been murdered a month ago in Panadura. The murder has been done in order to find money for his wedding and to fly in a helicopter for his honeymoon. He had been dreaming of going to his honeymoon in  a helicopter at any cost for which he needed money to take his wedding on a grand note.
Sarath Ranawaka (53 years old) has been working in Italy and had come home for a holiday. He had earned a lot of money while working in Italy. He has been known among people as ‘Pharmacy Sarath’. He has been  at home all alone. The murderer Aruna, who has been a resident of Wadduwa, Pothupitiya has got to know him as an Insurance agent.
Aruna who has been working as a technician has planned to hold his wedding in October and has been robbing to earn money by disguising himself as an Insurance agent. On one of his trips as an Insurance agent he had met Sarath who has been rich and living alone. He has got acquainted with him and has visited his home several times to strengthen the friendship. Aruna has planned to rob Sarath’s gold chain and to gain a lot of money.
Sarath had made a request to meet Aruna saying that he doesn’t have many friends in Sri Lanka. Aruna has agreed with the murderer’s plan in his mind. Accordingly, Aruna has visited Sarath’s house with a bottle of alcohol, pair of gloves and a knife.
After getting drunk, Aruna has stabbed Sarath and Sarath has not died from that. Thus he has been pushed to the bed and had  him with a pillow until he had stopped breathing. Aruna has successfully committed his deed as nobody had heard Sarath shouting for his life.
He has been hiding in the house till the next morning and he has left the house on the following day without anybody seeing him. He has robbed some jewelry and some valuable items on his way. Even though, Sarath has died on the 12th, the villagers have found out about the murder only after two days as the body had been stinking. Though, the Police have started investigations, no one has been able to name any suspects.
In between, Aruna had pawned the jewelry to find money. He has gone to two places one after the other and finally he has got Rupees 2 and 1/2 lacks. He has been very satisfied as that money has been sufficient for him to spend for the wedding. He has confessed that the money was for some events in the wedding and for him to go to honeymoon in a helicopter.
On the 30th of October, he has celebrated his wedding in a hotel in Panadura and has gone for honeymoon in a helicopter to Nuwara Eliya surprising all his relatives. He has paid Rs.48000/- for that trip. He has spent more money to spend his honeymoon in Kataragama and Aluthgama hotels.
By the time he has come home after his honeymoon, the Police have been able to apprehend him. The Police have been able to catch him from the places where he has pawned his jewelry. Villagers have given depositions about an Insurance agent who has paid frequent visits.
The murderer has been caught on yesterday the 13th. He has confessed that he has committed the murder in order to fulfill his dream of going for honeymoon in a helicopter. He has also taken a bet with his friends promising to fulfill his dream.
The suspect’s name is Aruna Suresh De Silva, 36 years old and he is a resident of Wadduwa Pothupitiya. He is to be taken to Kalutara courts shortly
