She had known about that her been abused by her father only after the teacher had thought about certain facts which should be known in a ’health’ class.
There is very little attention is drawn to sex education to the masses, particularly to children in schools in Sri Lanka. This leads to children becoming prone to sexual abuse, as they had not been educated adequately while attending school. Such an incident is reported from Balangoda.
A school girl only 13 years had been abused unknowingly by her father for a period of about two years. This was because she had not been thought about health education until a teacher in the class had explained about married life and as to how children are born to parents and other topics pertaining to rape, sexual abuse etc. Until the teacher explained her these finer points this 13 year old school girl had not known that she had been subjected to sexual abuse by her own father. Her mother had died and this girl had lived alone with her father.
After the teacher completed conducting the health class this girl who had been a victim had confidentially told her teacher about what her father had been harassing to her in the past. The teacher has discussed with the other teachers and had informed the Police, who had arrested the father. The girl had been sent for medical investigations and for a medical report to the Balangoda Base hospital.
This type of sex abuse had been discussed by various intellectuals and suggestions had been made to educate the young generations at school level with regard to educating the children on this subject. Unfortunately owing to cultural constraints this exercise had not been taken off the blocks for implementation.
