PRESIDENT’S VISIT TO 'KALU’S HIDEAWAY’

Hon President pays a visit to “Kalu’s Hideaway” in Udawalawe

During the recent past it had been reported that the current cricketers Mahela, Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya had opened restaurants in the Colombo city area as business ventures. However we had heard that the former Sri Lankan cricketer, wicket keeper and dynamic opening batsman Romesh Kaluvitharana who was a member of our World cup winning team in 1996, had opened a tourist resort called the ‘Kalu’s Hideaway’ sometime back very appropriately as a business venture close to the wild life sanctuary in Uda Walawe area.
It is pertinent to mention that Kaluvitharana was named as “Little Kalu’ by the famous cricket commentator Tony Grieg as he was diminutive in stature. He together with legendary Sanath Jayasuriya, which made new revolutionaries’ in the one day game by opening the batting together and going over the top to score swiftly in the first 15 mandatory ‘overs’ when there were field restrictions imposed. This was later emulated by openers of other Test playing nations as well and this concept has now come to stay.
Our ‘little kalu’ had built this Kalu’s Hideaway’ some time back for the benefit of the local and foreigners to rest and reside when they come to visit the Uda Walawe wild sanctuary. It is housed about eight kilometres away from the famous wild life sanctuary. It could accommodate about 30 guests at a time.
It is reported reliably that our Hon President had gone last week to officially open a Safari Resort Tourist Hotel located close to ‘Kalu’s Hideaway’ resort. He had made it a point to visit and to see  the activities and the business of kalu’s Hideaway resort also.
