MUSEUM ROBBER “KANGETTA” SPEAKS

The robber of the museum has been caught with the support of his illegal girl friend
“Kangetta” had bought a land and a ‘Batta’ vehicle

Lansage Priyantha Mendis Kumara alias ‘Kangetta’ has been identified as the main suspect of the robbery at Colombo Museum and he is said to be a drug addict.
Criminal Investigation Department had been able to arrest him by contacting him through a woman with whom he has been having an illicit relationship. He had been called by her and asked him to come to Negombo beach on the 27th where he had been arrested by the Police.
Even though a couple had been arrested in an earlier occasion, it has been now revealed that ‘Kangetta’ is the main suspect of the robbery. His confession confirms the evidence found and it reveals that he had planned the robbery all alone.
After the major robbery that took place on the 17th of March, Police have been looking for ‘Kangetta’ and the Police have been able to find some of the mobile numbers he had been using. Thus, they have found out that he has been having conversations with a woman and they have traced her and made her to take a call to ‘Kangetta’ to track him down.
Thus the woman had made him a call saying: “You have been very “arrogant and I haven’t seen you in a while”
“If you really like to see me, I can come to any place you want me to” has been ‘Kangetta’s’ reply.
As they have planned the suspect had come to meet the woman at the Negombo beach and the Police who have been hiding had arrested him. His mobile has been taken into custody for investigations and accordingly, five including two women had been arrested. The suspect had been a huge drug addict who had been a resident of Polgasowita. It was found out that he had been spending over Rs 20000/- ( Rupees twenty thousand rupees) for illegal drugs for a day.
The suspect had said that he wanted steal the items in the museum  and become a millionaire after seeing antiques in the museum in one of his visits to the museum as a helper in renovations. He had planned the robbery over a period of time and he had worked as a mason in a house next to the museum and he had been observing the routine. He has bought a chisel on the day prior to the robbery and he has hid in one of the cupboard of the museum. Then during the night he had collected all the things which he had thought would be very valuable. Afterwards he has broken a window on the top floor and used a bed sheet as a rope to climb down the balcony. Even though, he stated that he did not get outside support for the robbery, the Police suspects that he would have got external support. Police is conducting further investigations.
“When the police was looking for me, I worked in rice mills and petrol sheds. I sold some of the things I stole and earned about Rs 40 lacks. I used that money to buy a plot of land in Kaduwela. I bought a ‘Batta’ vehicle. Then I started a business of dried fish but my expenses on drugs were very high. Therefore all the money was spend so I had to sell the land and the vehicle to find cash. I lost all the money and had to start labor work.”
‘Kangetta’ is said to be drug addict who has been spending over Rs: 20,000 per day and he had been stealing and robbing houses to earn for his drugs. Police had wanted to arrest him over many years. He had been working as a postman and had been fired as he had been caught red-handed while stealing money from foreign letters.
The Police suspects that he had not been captured on CCTV cameras at the museum as the cameras had been none functioning and it is suspected that he has got external support as it was found that the switch of the UPS has been switched off by someone. That switch has been placed on the ground place where nobody can reach and it could never have been ‘Kangatte’ as he would have not known the directions. However, ‘Kangetta’ has been telling that he has done the robbery alone as he doesn’t believe in joint work.
Even though, there was a rumour of a strong politician’s involvement in the robbery, nothing of that sort has been found out yet.
The Police are conducting further investigations on this regard.
