United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) sweeps to victory in all three Provinces convincingly:
The overall results of the elections in the three Provinces, Sabaragamuwa North Central and the Eastern Province have been officially announced. In all three Provinces the ruling UPFA had won the majority of the seats very convincingly.
The only set back and exception had been in the Eastern Province where the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi party had beaten the UPFA in the Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts. However to compensate for it in the Amparai district the UPFA had gained a majority of 6200 to surpass the overall results of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, thus winning the Eastern Province as well to get a clean sweep in all Provinces.
Taking into consideration the overall results and the percentages of voters the UPFA had won 63 seats, while the UNP had won only 29 seats. The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi had won 14 seats, while the SLMC had won 7 seats only. The JVP and Wimal Werawansa’s National Freedom alliance had been able to secure only one solitary seat only.
