A coffin had been taken out and jewellery robbed from body of the dead woman after burial at the Polgolla cemetery:
These days there is much anxiety and greediness to rob wealth. In today’s context even a dead body is not spared to rest in peace after burial.
An unfortunate incident is reported last week from Polgolla cemetery in Kandy where a coffin of a dead woman after burial had been forcibly dug out, broken and the jewellery like earrings and other jewellery that she had worn had been robbed just the day after her burial.
The dead woman had died in a three wheeler accident in Girithale and her burial had taken place in the Polgolla cemetery. The following day family members and relatives had visited the cemetery taking along with them raw materials to erect a monument for the deceased. The relatives felt ashamed and were angry over the incident.
For their astonishment they were surprised to see that the coffin had been taken out after breaking the temporary bricks that were fixed around the coffin area where the monument was to be erected. They suspect that some people who came for the funeral may have seen that there was jewellery on the dead body which perhaps may have been expensive and done the robbery.
The incident was reported to the Wattegama Police who had given permission to have the coffin replaced into the same pit and had given permission to proceed with the construction of the proposed monument.
Police are conducting investigations into this disgraceful act to nab the culprits.
