Millionaire couple who had begged in buses for money had been caught:
Monthly income has been around one and half lacks:
There are many people begging in buses asking for donations by selling tickets printed under the name of some organization stating various reasons, mainly about illnesses of family members. The majority knows that half of them are not true. But at the same time there are cases which seem to be true as well. No one employs themselves to find out further. Some tend to buy the tickets for Rs 20/ or Rs 50/ for sympathy on them, purely for merit.
A recent investigation was launched to find out about a couple in Biyagama who had been employed in begging inside buses by selling tickets over a number of years purely as a business.
They have been begging saying that their children have been chronically ill and that they are struggling between life and death. The tickets have been sold for Rs: 20/- and for Rs 50/- using a name of a fake organization. In order to draw sympathy to attract the attention of the passengers, they have been even showing photographs of their children along with an address close to Bomiriya as evidence of their plight.
The police had suspected them and taken them into custody for further investigations. They have been able to reveal that the couple was not married even though they work together and that the addresses they have produced have been fake ones.
They have said that they have started begging as an occupation and the man had been a resident of Dematagoda and the woman had been identified as a resident of Chilaw.
They have confessed that they earn about Rs: 4000/- a day and that their monthly income was about one and half lacks which they divide equally among themselves. They have been doing this for years. They have also said that they have banked all the money and that they were in a position to live a good life with their savings and the money earned daily from begging.
They have told that they change routes everyday and that they go back to the same route once in three months. They have continued to do it since they have been able to earn lots of easy money.
They are to be taken before Magistrate courts.
