Why did not President meet Fidel Castro on his tour of Cuba:
The media extensively reported news about President’s visit to Cuba. However there is a question that need to be posed as to why the President could not meet Fidel Castro?. It is customary for a leader of any country who visits another country to meet the leader of that particular country even for a short time during an official visit.
This meeting is customary. However the President had been given an appointment to meet the widow of Che Guevara and his son Camellio and had posed for photographs as well. About his inability to meet Fidel Castro, there are no official reports coming from Cuba or Sri Lanka.
It is reported that Cuba was devoid of an embassy in Cuba for a period of one year. It was very recently that our representative in United States Tamara Kunanayagam was requested to assume duties in Havana city in Cuba as the Sri Lankan Ambassador.
It is spoken and reported that Tamara Kunanayagam had failed in her duties in arranging a meeting between our President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Fidel Castro. Some are of the opinion that she as not that efficient to arrange a meeting.
There are some rumours that in various websites had published that although Fidel Castro was requested to give an appointment to meet our President. But he had not given his consent to it, but rejected the invitation.
