On the pretext of borrowing money from the bus drivers and conductors until money was collected, a young couple had been arrested and remanded:
A couple who had collected money in a most shrewd and dramatic fashion. The duo is by the names of Chathuranga and Samitha. Both had pretended to be as undergraduates of the Colombo campus.
They had communicated with private bus owners saying
“they are both undergraduates of the Colombo Campus and they have organized a campus batch trip on a particular day and they wanted the bus to be sent near the campus premises early morning.”
Until the other batch mates arrived they had wanted them to remain there for a while. In the meantime they had told that they would be collecting money in the evening and until then they require about a sum of Rupees ten thousand for meals and other expenses. After they were convinced the bus crew they have collected money on numerous occasions and had quietly vanished from the front gate and had escaped via the rear gate. As a number of undergraduates were due to participate the bus crew had not had any suspicion about the request and obliged the duo without much hesitation.
Several times they had manipulated this bus trip scam successfully. Those who were played out had made complaints at the Cinnamon Gardens Police station. This they had done after staying there for a number of hours. When they had made inquiries about such batch trips, it had been flatly denied and was found to be absolutely fake stories about ‘batch trips’ as spelt out by the duo.
Police have had complaints that this duo had played out for sums between Rupees three thousand to rupees ten thousand which had amounted to a huge sum. The Police unit who were making investigations was successful in nabbing the duo Chathuranga and Samitha and had arrested them and was produced before courts. They had been ordered to be remanded until the 25th.
